Carbondale, Colorado, November 25, 2024– The Powers Art Center is pleased to announce, In the Living Room with John and Kimiko, opening December 3, 2024, and continuing until November 1, 2025.

In the Living Room with John and Kimiko welcomes guests to enter a moment in time where extraordinary friendships shaped a vibrant collection. John and Kimiko Powers acquired one of the most significant collections of contemporary art and together they shaped a cultural experience in Colorado. John’s advocacy extended beyond collecting; he envisioned art as a communal and educational experience. Establishing a residency program at The Aspen Center for Contemporary Art demonstrated his commitment to fostering creativity, inviting luminaries like Lichtenstein, Indiana, and Rosenquist to share their insights. These efforts bridged the gap between the art community and public, emphasizing accessibility and dialogue. Kimiko's keen artistic sensibility complemented John's ambitions, shaping their collection into a celebration of innovation and aesthetics.

Their living room—once filled with iconic works and a space for dialogue among creatives—now finds resonance in this new Powers Art Center exhibit, In the Living Room. Recreating this environment, alongside ephemera such as event posters sculpture, furniture and textiles, In the Living Room captures the vibrancy and intimacy of that era. Artist on display include Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Frank Stella, among other artist friends of the Powers. Viewers will see the how the Powers connection with the artists inspired many of these works and left a legacy of art in the Valley, reminding viewers of the transformative power of art.

All works on display are from the former collection of John and Kimiko Powers now stewarded by the Ryobi Foundation.

In addition to In the Living Room, on display in the upstairs galleries of the museum is the current show, Not Mine But Taken focusing on Jasper Johns minimalist approach to art. This exhibit explores some of his most recognizable symbols in their simplest and most stripped-down forms. It offers visitors a deeper understanding of Johns' creative process and his ability to elevate everyday imagery into powerful artistic statements. This exhibition is open until May 3, 2025.

As well as the galleries, the Powers Art Center has an extensive art library and a learning

lab for hands on art making experiences.
