Their connection to the art world went far beyond collecting. As passionate supporters and advocates, the Powers formed meaningful relationships with the artists they championed, always encouraging a broad appreciation for art.

Their collection is widely known for iconic Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, and Tom Wesselmann. It also includes important works by leading figures of postwar American art, including Jasper Johns, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Christo. In addition to American art, the Powers held a deep appreciation for both ancient Japanese art and contemporary ceramics—most notably, a collection by Takashi Nakazato, a 13th-generation master of traditional Karatsu ware.

The centerpiece of the collection is the nearly complete body of Jasper Johns’ works on paper. With over 400 pieces, it is among the most extensive holdings of its kind. Four of the five galleries at the Powers Art Center are dedicated to Johns’ work, offering rare insight into his artistic development and his enduring influence on contemporary art. This singular focus underscores the Center’s mission to deepen public understanding of one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century.
